As se usa para hablar de la función, uso, papel o trabajo de una persona o cosa (trabajó como camarera durante las vacaciones, she worked as a waitress during the holidays) o para comparar dos acciones o situaciones y expresar su similitud. Pero sera ese mismo ano, 1950, el que vera nacer la primera de un conjunto de peliculas modelicas, cinco en total, dirigidas por Anthony Mann y protagonizadas por James Stewart, que consolidaran al realizador como uno de los iconos del western moderno. Aunque en lo sucesivo se alternaran en la filmografia del director los westerns y los filmes de otro tipo, por ejemplo, los grandes espectaculos visuales como El Cid (1961) y La caida del imperio romano (The Fall of the Roman Empire, 1963), dirigidas en Espana para Samuel Bronston, Mann sera, ya para siempre, “el hombre del oeste”. Budd Boetticher, Delmer Daves, John Ford, Ho ward Hawks, Anthony Mann y Sam Peckinpah son, por orden alfabetico, los grandes nombres del western. A ellos se pueden acercar Henry Hathaway y William A. Wellman, pero probablemente el primero de todos es Anthony Mann, autor de una obra rica y coherente en la que combina a la perfeccion el espacio abierto y sus cualidades, con el ser humano y sus pasiones. El dolor mitico asociado a la venganza lo expresa James Stewart, el actor clave de los westerns de Mann, de modo incomparable, aunque hay que detenerse en la leccion, que roza lo sublime, que nos dictan, a duo, director y actor, en este caso Gary Cooper, en esa obra maestra que se llama El hombre del Oeste. 1906-1986Vienes de nacimiento, hijo de una familia de clase alta, estudia Leyes pero se interesa por el teatro. Ayudante del celebre Max Reinhardt, pasa a su vez a la direccion teatral hasta que, consolidado como director teatral en los escenarios europeos, en 1935 es contratado para dirigir una obra en Nueva York. Reedita sus exitos en Broadway, antes de ser tentado por Hollywood. Aunque habia dirigido una pelicula en Alemania en 1932, es en los Estados Unidos donde se consagra como realizador de peliculas de tanto exito como Laura (1944). Sus inicios en la Meca del cine, sin embargo, no fueron faciles, dirigiendo para Fox un par de peliculas de serie B sin demasiada trascendencia que le hicieron volver a su trabajo teatral en Nueva York, donde, por razones azarosas, fue actor, tarea que esporadicamente tambien llevaria a cabo en el cine. Su gran exito, la citada Laura, llego a dirigirla por casualidad, al ser relevado el director previsto inicialmente, Rouben Mamoulian. Como director, Preminger se atreve a abordar en sus filmes asuntos de candente actualidad como la creacion del Estado de Israel (Exodo, Exodus, 1960), los problemas de la iglesia catolica (The Cardinal, El cardenal, 1963), o el “apartheid” en Sudafrica (Hurry Sundown, La noche deseada, 1967). Aunque hoy esta un poco olvidado, una figura tan importante como la de Otto Preminger debe volver al lugar de privilegio que le corresponde entre los creadores cinematograficos del siglo XX. 1890-1955Lloyd Bacon sera siempre recordado como el director de La calle 42 (42nd Street, 1933) y de Desfile de candilejas (Footlight Parade, 1933). Por lo demas, es un ho nesto, antiguo y prolifico profesional, que realiza mas de cien peliculas desde 1922, de las que casi 40 son mudas. Nacido en San Jose, California, perteneciente a una familia inmersa en el mundo escenico, sus primeros pasos en este universo los da como actor sobre un escenario. En Holly wood, ya en 1915, pasa por Essenay, Mutual y Triangle co mo especialista y actor, antes de convertirse en guionista y director a las ordenes de Mack Sennett. En 1925 pasa a Warner Bros, donde desarrollara la ma yor y mejor parte de su carrera como director, que incluye los dos musicales citados. En 1944 pasa a la Fox, y a partir de 1948 alterna con otras productoras. 1899-1984Nacido en Portland, Oregon, director de fotografia, experto en efectos especiales y realizador, Byron Haskin es uno de esos grandes profesionales de Hollywood que no parecen gozar del prestigio intelectual necesario pero que, por el contrario, construyen productos de una solidez tal que rozan la genialidad. Eso les ocurre a peliculas como La isla del tesoro (Treasure Island, 1950), La guerra de los mundos (The War of the Worlds, 1953) o Cuando ruge la marabunta (The Naked Jungle, 1954). Estudia en Berkeley, trabaja para International Newsreels, Pathe News y el San Francisco News, antes de convertirse en operador ayudante. Aunque en 1927 rueda cuatro filmes mudos como director, se centra de inmediato en su actividad de director de fotografia, conformando una filmografia de mas de treinta titulos que llega hasta mediados de los anos 30. Despues, amplia su campo de accion, haciendose especialista, y de los buenos, en efectos especiales: Dodge, ciudad sin ley (Dodge City, Michael Curtiz, 1939), El ultimo refugio (High Sierra, Raoul Walsh, 1941) o Arsenico por compasion (Arsenic and Old Lace, Frank Capra, 1944) son algunas de las peliculas en las que colaboro en este cometido antes de iniciar, realmente, su carrera como director. 1899-1980Prolifico director, capaz de rodar entre seis y siete filmes por ano, durante treinta, ajustandose siempre al presupuesto, cuya filmografia en el western se centra en la serie del cowboy cantante Roy Rogers, en algunas peliculas de la correspondiente serie del tambien cowboy cantante Gene Autry, y en la reunion, de dos en dos, de diversos capitulos del serial televisivo dedicado a Wild Hill Hickcok, con Guy Ma dison y Andy Devine como protagonistas. Estos ultimos, un total de 28 episodios distribuidos en catorce peliculas, no figuran aqui, dado su caracter de filmes realizados para TV que no han sufrido modificacion alguna antes de su pase en sa las de cine. Falle cido en 1980, puede resultar sorprendente que Mc - Donald firme una ultima pelicula como director en 1994. Se explica porque el largometraje en cuestion esta formado por escenas tomadas de otro serial televisivo, dedicado en esta ocasion al famosisimo Wyatt Earp, y escenas nuevas ro dadas para completar el metraje. 1913-1993Nacido en Los Angeles, estuvo a sueldo de Warner Bros como montador durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En ese periodo trabaja en algunas peliculas importantes, particularmente Tener y no tener (To Have and Have Not, 1944), donde hace amistad con su director, Howard Hawks, a cuyo equipo tecnico se incorpora. En tal condicion, participa en otra pelicula de Hawks, Rio Rojo (Red River, 1949), origen del conflicto que surgio entre Hawks, Nyby y Howard Hughes. Este acuso a Hawks de plagio, al pretender que Red River debia mas de lo razonable a The Outlaw, la pelicula que habia frimado Hughes en 1943. Hawks y Nyby estaban trabajando entonces en La cosa (The Thing from Another World, 1951), que iba a ser el debut del segundo como director. De resultas del conflicto, Hawks se vio obligado a desaparecer de la pelicula, que fue remontada y estrenada, aunque, afortunadamente, mas tarde se recupero el montaje original. Siempre se especulara con la aportacion real de Nyby a esa obra maestra del genero fantastico, que segun muchos dirigio el siempre magnifico Howard Hawks. Es cierto que Nyby no volvio a firmar nada con algun interes, si bien es igualmente cierto que este antiguo montador desarrollo su tarea como director, en la que tuvo tan lucido debut, principalmente en television. En 1949 deja Warner Bros despues de ca torce anos de relacion con la productora y se establece como director independiente, lo que tiene la ventaja de poder abordar proyectos mas personales, y la desventaja de la inestabilidad profesional. Pocos realizadores poseen la habilidad que tiene Don Siegel para narrar en imagenes. Ausente de retorica, el aspecto visual de sus filmes es de una precision y sencillez dificiles de igualar, incluso en sus filmes menos afortunados. En una filmografia riquisima, llena de aciertos, destacan, a mi juicio, dos peliculas bien alejadas en el tiempo; por una parte, la mitica La invasion de los ladrones de cuerpos (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), no estrenada comercialmente en Espana en su momento, pero bien conocida a traves de la pequena pantalla, perteneciente al genero fantastico, cuyo “mensaje” progresista esta muy lejos de la habitual soflama. La segunda, un filme atipico que podria no ser considerado como un western, pero que en decision personal he decidido incluir aqui, aunque solo sea por su localizacion temporal, la de la Guerra de Secesion norteamericana, es El seductor (The Beguiled, 1971), introspectiva y cruel como pocas peliculas pueden llegar a serlo. Con mas motivo aun, puede resultar extrano considerar que La jungla humana sea un western.
