גְּמַרII ch. same; 1) to finish. Targ. Ps. 57:3 דְּיִגְמַר (ed. Lag. די גמר, corr. acc.); a. fr.Pes.55a גַּמְרִינָן we dare finish a work commenced. Ib. מִיגְמַר אין אתחולי לא to finish is permitted, but not to begin; a. fr. 2) to consume, destroy. Targ. Job 1:16. Ib. 22:20; a. fr. (also Pa.). 3) to end, cease. Targ. Ps. 12:2 גְּמִירוּ they are gone. Targ. Prov. 5:11. Ib. 22:8; a. e. 4) to conclude, derive. Ḥull.98b ולִיגְמַר מיניה now let one draw a conclusion from this (by analogy)! Ib. מחידוש לא גַבְרִינָן from an exception we draw no conclusions; a. fr. 5) to be perfect, ready to answer, to know well. Targ. Y. Deut. 6:7 ותִגְמְרִינוּןוכ׳, read ותַגְ׳, v. infra.Part. גָּמֵיר. אָבַד(b. h.; √אב, v. אבב) to be pressed, go around in despair (v. Prov. 31:6; Deut. 26:6) to be given up, whence 1) to be lost, perish; to be beyond recognition. Sifré Deut. 301 (ref. to Deut. 26:5) לא ירד … אלא לאובד (read לוֹבֵד or לֶאֱבוֹד; Yalk. Deut. a. l. לאבדם prob. לאַבְרָּן; Ms. Zer. Abr. 3 לֵיאָבֵר) Jacob went to Aram with no hope but to perish (be a slave). Ohol. XVII, 3 a field שא׳ בו קבר in which there is a grave that cannot be located. Keth. XIII, 7 אָבְדָה דרךוכ׳ the path to his field cannot be traced. Gen. R. s. 91 אבידה א׳ לנו we have lost something; a. fr. 2) to lose. Ib. ואנו שאָבַדְנוּר׳ ס׳ and we who have lost (mourn for) R. S.; a. fr.Part. pass. אָבוּד lost, irretrievable, perishing, decayed. Keth.108a על הא׳ on a contribution to the Temple which has been lost on the road. Zar.19a לעולם יגמר ואע״ג דמשכח ולִיגְרַס ואע״ג דלא ידעוכ׳ Ms. M. one must at all events acquire readiness (v. גְּמַר II), though one may afterwards forget, and one must study by heart though one does not understand, for Holy Writ says (Ps. 119:20) garsah ; it says גָרְסָה and not טָחֲנָה (my soul heaps up, but not it grinds, learns but not analyzes); (ed. לִיגְרִיס, and other Variants); Yalk.
