(1759-1828) Торнтон, УильямАрхитектор и изобретатель. Врач по образованию, в 1787 иммигрировал в США, обосновался в Филадельфии. Принял участие в открытом конкурсе на проект здания Капитолия в Вашингтоне. Внешняя часть здания строилась по его проекту и частично под его наблюдением. Автор таких проектов, как "Восьмигранник" [ Octagon House] в Вашингтоне, площадь Тюдор-плейс [Tudor Place] в Джорджтауне и др. Позднее был членом городской комиссии г. Вашингтона, в 1802 президент Т. Джефферсон [ Jefferson, Thomas] назначил его комиссаром по вопросам патентов [commissioner of patents].
