21 פָּשַׁע
פָּשַׁע(b. h.) ( to pass beyond, 1) to be wilful, rebellious. Yoma IV, 2 פָּשַׁעְתִּי; ib. VI, 2 פָּשְׁעוּ, v. עָוָה; a. fr.פּוֹשֵׂעַ a wilful transgressor, rebel, apostate. Gitt.57a פ׳ ישראל a Jewish apostate (the censors disguise for Jesus). Ib. תא חזי מה בין פּוֹשְׁעֵי ישראלוכ׳ come and see the difference between Jewish apostates and gentile prophets. R. Hash. 17a פ׳ ישראל בגופן Jewish sinners with their bodies (disregarding the ceremonial laws intended to guard the purity of life); פ׳ אומות העולם בגופן gentile sinners with their bodies (lustful and violent). Midr. Till. to Ps. 51 כשאתה אומר לפּוֹשְׁעִים … אם תקבלני כל הפושעים משלימים לך when thou sayest to the sinners, why have you not repented? (they may plead ignorance of thy goodness, but) if thou receivest me, all sinners will make peace with thee; a. fr. 2) to be faithless. Gen. R. s. 52 (ref. to Prov. 18:19) פָּשַׁעְתָּ באברהם thou (Lot) wast faithless to Abraham; Num. R. s. 18 זה קרח שפ׳ בתורהוכ׳ this refers to Korah who was faithless to the Law, which is called ‘strength; a. fr.Esp. (with ref. to Ex. 22:8) to be negligent in guarding a trust. B. Mets.36b פ׳ בהוכ׳ if he was careless in guarding the animal, and it went out Ib. 34a כיון שאמר פשעתיוכ׳ as soon as he says, ‘I have been at fault, he surrenders the eventual fine (of the thief) to the owner. Ib. 58a כי היכי דלא לקרו להו פושעים in order that they may not be called faithless guardians; a. fr.Ber.28a ונקרא פושע and he is called negligent (because he delayed his prayers). Hif. הִפְשִׁיעַ to cause to transgress. Num. R. s. 9 (ref. to Ex. 22:8) מדבר באהרן שה׳ ישראל בדיבור לא יהיה it alludes to Aaron who caused Israel to transgress the commandment, ‘thou shalt have no other gods (Ex. 20:3). -
22 שבע
שָׁבַעNif. נִשְׁבַּע (b. h.) to be sworn, to swear. Shebu.III, 6 נ׳ לבטלוכ׳ if a person swears that he will omit to perform a commandment. Ib. VI, 4 אין נִשְׁבָּעִין עלוכ׳ no oath is imposed in refutation of a claim of a deaf and mute, or of an insane person, or of a minor, nor do we administer an oath to a (claimant) minor, אבל נשבעין לקטןוכ׳ but you must make oath when suing a minor or the sacred treasury. Ib. 7 ומי נ׳ מי … שמא יִשָּׁבַע זהוכ׳ which of them is first admitted to an oath? He with whom the (lost) pledge was deposited, lest this one (the debtor) swear (to the value of the pledge), and the other produce the pledge (and prove him a perjurer). Ib. VII, 1 כל הנשבעין שבתורה נשבעיןוכ׳ all those bound to swear according to Biblical law swear and are free from payment, but the following swear and receive (are awarded their claim). Ib. 32b ואינו יכול לִישָּׁבֵעַ, v. שְׁבוּעָה; a. fr. Hif. הִשְׁבִּיעַ to adjure; to impose, administer an oath. Ib. IV, 3 אמרו אין אנו … מַשְׁבִּיעַ אני עליכםוכ׳ if they say, we know no testimony in thy case, (and he says,) I adjure you, and they say, Amen: they are guilty (if they could testify). Ib. ה׳ עליהן … חוץוכ׳ if he adjured them five times out of court, and coming before court they confess (that they know testimony), they are acquitted. Ib. VIII, 2 מַשְׁבִּיעֲךָ אניוכ׳ I adjure thee, and he says, Amen. Ib. 29a; 39a, a. e. וכשמַשְׁבִּיעִין אותו … אני משביעין אותךוכ׳ and when the court administers an oath to him, they say to him, know that we cause thee to swear not in thy sense, but in the sense of God and in the sense of the court; a. fr.Part. pass. מוּשְׁבָּע; pl. מוּשְׁבָּעִין. שִׂמְחָהf. (b. h.; preced.) joy, rejoicing, festive occasion. Keth.8a (in Chald. dict.) אפושי ש׳ בעלמא הוא it is merely an extension of the wedding joy (not a new festive occasion). Ib. מברך שהש׳ במעונו he says the benediction containing the words, ‘in whose dwelling there is joy. Y.B. Bath.IX, 16d bot. שִׂמְחַת זכר the joy over the birth of a male child. Gen. R. s. 70; M. Kat. 8b ש׳ בש׳, v. עָדב I; a. fr.Esp. שמחת יום טוב, or ש׳ the rejoicing on the festival (Deut. 16:11; 14). R. Hash. 6b איתה בש׳ she (woman) is included in the commandment to observe the festival with joy. Ḥag.6a חנה … מיחייבא בש׳ was not Hannah herself bound to visit the Temple in order to rejoice? Pes.109a בזמן … אין ש׳ אלא בבשר … אין ש׳ אלא ביין as long as the Temple stood, the festive rejoicing consisted in eating meat (of the peace-offering), … but now … the festive celebration consists in partaking of wine; a. fr.Pl. שְׂמָחוֹת.
