Mis en ligne en mai 1998, 00h00 [www.00h00.com, aujourd’hui défunt] est la première maison d’édition au monde à commercialiser des livres numériques. Ses deux fondateurs, Jean-Pierre Arbon et Bruno de Sa Moreira, choisissent le nom "00h00" (qui se prononce "zéro heure") à dessein pour évoquer "cette idée d’origine, de nouveau départ", en faisant le pari de concilier édition électronique et commerce. Pas de stock, pas de contrainte physique de distribution, mais un très beau site, sur lequel on lit: “Internet est un lieu sans passé, où ce que l’on fait ne s’évalue pas par rapport à une tradition. Il y faut inventer de nouvelles manières de faire les choses.” En 2000, le catalogue comprend 600 titres, une centaine d’oeuvres originales et des rééditions électroniques d’ouvrages publiés par d’autres éditeurs. Les versions numériques représentent 85% des ventes, les 15% restants étant des versions imprimées à la demande du client. En septembre 2000, 00h00 est racheté par Gemstar-TV Guide International, société américaine spécialisée dans les produits et services numériques pour les médias. Ce rachat permet à Gemstar d’étendre ses activités à l’Europe et d’accéder à l’édition numérique francophone. 00h00 cesse ses activités en juin 2003, tout comme la branche eBook de Gemstar.
