Kissing people on both cheeks (not on the lips) as a form of welcome, or farewell, is a normal part of life in France. It is a well codified social practice, but the format varies from region to region. Generally speaking, in northern France people kiss twice, once on each cheek, in Mediterranean France three times, and in the Paris area four times.
