    Военизированная морская пограничная служба, до создания Министерства национальной безопасности [ Department of Homeland Security, U.S.] в январе 2003 в мирное время подчинялась министерству финансов [ Department of the Treasury, U.S.]; в военное время переходила в подчинение министерства ВМС [ Department of the Navy]. Функции: борьба с контрабандой, охрана кораблей и портов, поисково-спасательные операции, контроль за соблюдением федерального морского законодательства. Использует сторожевые корабли, патрульные катера, буксиры, ледоколы, вертолеты и самолеты. Создана в 1790 как Морская налоговая служба [Revenue Marine], затем преобразована в Службу сбора пошлин при помощи катеров [Revenue Cutter Service]. Современное название носит с 1915, когда Конгресс принял закон о присоединении к ней Спасательной службы [Life-Saving Service]. В 1939 расширена за счет Службы обслуживания маяков [Lighthouse Service], в 1946 - Бюро морской инспекции. Около 40 тыс. служащих. Женщин-военнослужащих Береговой охраны обычно называют [spars] (сокращение от [Semper PARatus] (лат) - "всегда готовы!" - девиза Береговой охраны).
