Часть генеральной совокупности элементов, которая охватывается наблюдением (часто ее называют выборочной совокупностью, а выборкой — сам метод выборочного наблюдения). В математической статистике принят принцип случайного отбора; это означает, что каждый элемент имеет равный шанс попасть в В. Различают В. возвратную и невозвратную. В первом случае каждый отобранный элемент возвращается в исследуемую совокупность до того, как произойдет отбор следующего элемента. Во втором — отобранный элемент «изымается» из дальнейшего рассмотрения. Причем невозвратная (или безвозвратная) В. может рассматриваться как возвратная, если она составляет малую часть совокупности. На практике используются следующие основные виды В.: Собственно случайная выборка. — когда объекты для изучения отбираются по жребию, на основе таблицы случайных чисел, и т.п. Систематическая (или механическая) выборка., когда отбор производится через определенный интервал (шаг отбора) из списка единиц совокупности, расположенных в нем в определенном порядке. Типическая выборка. — когда генеральная совокупность разбивается на типические группы или слои (страты) и внутри каждой группы производится (случайный или механический) отбор. Серийная выборка (иногда кластерная, от английского cluster sampling), смысл которой удобно пояснить на примере: чтобы определить для какого-то антропометрического обследования средний рост школьников-первоклассников, можно случайным или механическим способом выбрать город, в этом городе — район, в районе — школу, в школе — класс, а затем провести сплошное измерение роста всех учеников этого класса.
