CATCH, CATCH ATCatch означает 'схватить, ловить, поймать': to catch a ball, to catch a thief, to catch mice. В Америке его знает каждый, и используется оно, в силу обилия таких ситуаций, постоянно. Произошло вот откуда. "Catch-22" - название романа Джозефа Хеллера. В нем описана ситуация, когда к человеку предъявляют строгие и взаимоисключающие требования.
Catch on — ухватить, в смысле понять, усечь. Did he catch on? - До него дошло?
Catch hell — смысл, думается, довольно прозрачен - наказали человека или грубо отшили. Дословно - поиметь ад.
