1 Carrickmacross Lace
Is of two kinds, applique and guipure. The applique is made by placing fine linen or cotton fabrics over plain net and applying designs with the chain or button hole stitch, and then cutting away the surplus material, leaving the outline of the design quite clear. A fine white embroidery on linen cambric and connected with lace stitches. Originally started by nuns in Europe, later Saxony adopted it and then France about 1750, afterwards the art was taken up in Scotland and Ireland.
