       Natural de Bristol, en Gran Bretana, escribe para el teatro y es contratado por la productora Elstree co mo guionista. Dirige peliculas, en su pais, desde 1950. Nunca fue muy apreciado, aunque recientemente se han empezado a destacar algunos de sus viejos filmes, como Los canones de Navarone (The Guns of Navarone, 1961), proyecto del que se encargo inicialmente el gran Alexander Mac kendrick, o El cabo del terror (Cape Fear, 1962), del que Martin Scorsese hizo el correspondiente remake en 1991. Desde 1962 trabaja, preferentemente, en Estados Unidos. El western, desde luego, no es su es pecialidad, aunque la tramposa El oro de Mackenna pueda suscitar algun que otro entusiasmo.
