2 dogie
(origin uncertain, see below)1) West: 1888. A motherless calf; a young, scrawny calf; a runt.Alternate forms: doge, dogee, dogey, doghie, dogie calf, dogy, doughie.2) Arizona, California: 1921. By extension, a motherless lamb. Also dogie lamb.3) Adams indicates this term sometimes means a laced shoe.4) According to Blevins, also used adjectivally in a humorous way for anything doomed to failure or "unlikely to survive." The origin of this term is uncertain, but there are many theories. Hendrickson provides several possibilities. The term may be from "dough-guts," referring to the swollen bellies of orphaned calves, or it may derive from "doggie," a playful way to refer to young calves. This latter etymology does not explain why the stem vowel of dogie is never pronounced [a] (as in doggie) but as [o]. Hendrickson, among others, also claims that it derives from the Spanish adobe or "dobie." Both he and Blevins also note that it may have derived from Bambara dogo or African Creole dogi, both of which mean 'short' or 'small.' Hendrickson hypothesizes that the term was originally applied by black cowboys. Blevins cites Owen Wister, who believes that the term comes from doga, a term meaning 'trifling stock.' Dale Jarman (personal communication) presents the most convincing etymology. He derives the term from dogal (see above), since these young orphaned calves could be led by a rope tied around the neck. It is possible that some cowpoke who knew enough Spanish to mistakenly identify -al as the common collective suffix, may have coined the blend: supposed Spanish root dog plus the English diminutive. Spanish sources do not reference a similar term.see adobe -

Geom torus4. [carretilla elevadora] forklift truckTOROSBullfighting is a highly controversial topic in all of the countries where it takes place. As well as in Spain itself (where campaigns against it are on the increase, especially among young people), it is popular in many Latin American countries, especially Peru and Mexico, though it has been banned in Uruguay since 1912. The fight begins with the band playing as the mounted officials (“alguacilillos”) ride into the ring, followed by a majestic parade of bullfighters (“toreros”). During this parade (or “paseíllo”), the bullfighters, wearing their colourful costumes (known as “trajes de luces”), lead in their teams of assistants (“subalternos”) and picadors. First the bull is provoked into charging by a series of passes (the “pases de capote”) made with a red and yellow coloured cape. This is followed by the three main stages of the bullfight. In the first, the “tercio de varas”, mounted picadors jab the bull with a spear; in the second, the “tercio de banderillas”, small barbed darts (“banderillas”) are thrust into the bull's back as it charges past the “banderillero”; and finally, the “tercio de muerte” features the bullfighter and his red cape (“muleta”) as he confronts and kills the bull, and (with luck) makes a triumphal exit.* * *m bull;ir a los toros go to a bullfight;tomar al toro por los cuernos take the bull by the horns* * *toro nm: bull* * *toro n bull -

18 California
(Sp. model spelled same [kalifórnja]; originally the name of an island in a Spanish romantic poem Las Sergas de Esplandián, written by Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo; the name is possibly a blend of the word caliph and the names of Spanish cities such as Calahorra. When Spanish explorers discovered Baja California, they assumed it was an island and called it California. The territory that is now the state of California was known as Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule)1) The thirty-first state in the Union. It became part of the United States in 1850.2) Northwestern Texas: 1933. The DARE references california as a verb meaning to throw an animal by catching it with a rope around its neck and flank and tripping it with one's foot. A method used especially for large and unmanageable calves. Not referenced in Spanish sources.3) An attributive adjective used in many combinations to denote animals (such as the California condor, California jay, California lion, California quail, California yellowtail, etc.), plants (California beeplant, California laurel, California lilac, California nutmeg, California sidesaddle flower), and items particular to California's history. The terms that are pertinent to the cowboy's era or trade are listed below. -
19 capador
(Sp. model spelled same [kapaðór] < capar 'to castrate' < capón 'gelded animal' < Vulgar Latin * cappo 'capon' plus agentive suffix -dor; 'one who castrates')The cowboy who castrates male calves, making them steers. He is also responsible for marking each animal by nicking a piece off its ear. The capador keeps the ear pieces in his pocket so that they can be used later for counting purposes. The DRAE confirms that a capador is a man whose responsibility it is to castrate animals. -
20 chaps
( chaparreras [t∫aparéras] < chaparro [see above] plus the Spanish suffix -era 'utensil'; the preferred pronunciation in English is [Jaéps]; this pronunciation was probably influenced by the Spanish spoken along the border, where speakers often pronounce the digraph {ch} as [ J] or {sh})Wyoming: 1884 (chaps); DARE: 1887 ( chaparajos); Texas: 1892 ( chaparreras). Leather leggings worn by cowboys over regular trousers to protect their legs from brush or chaparral. They are generally made from the hides of goat, sheep, calves, bulls, and deer, but they can be made from any type of leather. They also come in many lengths and varieties, ranging from simple and practical ones to highly decorated ones with silver ornaments and animal hair left on the outside. Spanish sources reference chaparreras, but only Cobos references chaparejos (he says the word is a blend of chaparro 'shrub' and aparejo 'gear' and refers to leather leggings or chaps). However, the DARE suggests that chaparejos may be a blend of chaparreras and aparejo. The DRAE defines chaparreras as a type of tanned leather breeches used in Mexico. Santamaría adds that they are a type of pants without a seat consisting of two separate coverings for the legs that are attached to the belt by straps. They are often made of goatskin with the hair left on, and as such are also known as chivarras. They are worn over the pants and serve as a protection against rain and mud. They may also be made of puma or jaguar skin, chamois, or canvas. Islas adds that they are often open along the seams and are fastened to the legs with buckles.Alternate forms: chaparajos, chaparejos, chapareras, chapareros, chaparraros, chaparras, chaparreros, chaparro, chaparros, chaperajos, chapparejos, schapps, schaps, shaps.Clark: 1930s. A variety of chaps with short, wide leggings. Also known as buzzard wings.
