Первоначально - 8-разрядная 62-контактная шина расширения (см. expansion bus) для ПК IBM РС/ХТ (1981 г.). С появлением в 1984 г. компьютеров IBM РС АТ на процессорах Intel 80286 шина получила также название AT-bus, стала 16-разрядной, 98-контактной и с частотой 8,33 МГц (эта частота именуется ISA bus clock), число линий адреса увеличилось с 20 до 24-x. В 1991 г. была стандартизована ISO.
