При этом скорость передачи цифровых аудиоданных вычисляется как произведение числа выборок (частоты дискретизации) на размер выборки в битах; например, для 16-бит 48-кГц двухканального несжатого аудио этот показатель равен 1536 кбит/с (16 x 48 x 2). Для цифрового видео скорость передачи (битрейт, bit rate) вычисляется как произведение числа битов на пиксел на число пикселов в строке на число строк в кадре на число кадров в секунду; например, для DVD-фильма до сжатия этот показатель обычно равен 99,5 Мбит/с (12 x 720 x 480 x 24). После сжатия необходимая скорость передачи данных уменьшается.
