Умеренный континентальный климат, на западе засушливый. Первыми европейцами, посетившими эти места, были в 1738-40 франко-канадцы. США приобрели большую часть современной Северной Дакоты в 1803 при покупке Луизианы [ Louisiana Purchase]. В 1804 регион был исследован экспедицией Льюиса и Кларка [ Lewis and Clark Expedition], тогда же основан форт Мандан [Fort Mandan]. Несколько шотландских и ирландских семей основали первое поселение недалеко от г. Пембина [Pembina] в 1812. В 1818 США купили северо-восточную часть будущего штата у Великобритании, а район Пембины отошел к США в 1823. Штат занимает первое место в США по запасам бурого угля, ведется также добыча природного газа и урана. Важнейшие виды промышленности - производство сельскохозяйственной техники и продуктов питания. Важное место в экономике штата занимают также туризм и сфера обслуживания. В 1981 в штате легализован игорный бизнес, который дает ему хороший доход. Немалую прибыль принесло штату и строительство военно-воздушных баз и стартовых комплексов ракет в 1970-80-е.
