•• * Cловари по-прежнему не воспринимают описанное в статье vogue words «Моего несистематического словаря» употребление слова breathless как отдельное значение, очевидно предполагая, что заложенная здесь метафора (запыхавшись, не переводя дыхания) вполне очевидна. По-моему, это не так – речь идет не об окказиональном словоупотреблении, а именно о новом значении. Не говоря уже о том, что оно почти всегда ставит перед переводчиком непростую задачу нахождения контекстуального варианта перевода. Диапазон большой – от эмоциональности или тенденциозности до бездумности (чего не сделаешь «впопыхах»!).

•• ...After the [11/9] attack, anger fought denial to a standoff: No one protested when Hollywood simply edited the twin towers out of movies and television shows. Now we’re just as breathlessly signing on to more towers, as if we could turn back to the future on a dime. (New York Times)
•• Здесь breathlessly – не раздумывая, ничтоже сумняшеся. (Anger fought denial to a standoff... – Противоборство гнева и отторжения привело к тому, что... – должен сказать, что логика автора не совсем ясна).
•• А сейчас мы не долго думая соглашаемся на строительство новых башен, как если бы тем самым могли мгновенно оставить позади прошлое и устремиться в будущее.
•• Следующая цитата – на тему об освещении иракской войны в английских и американских СМИ:
•• After watching the British reports, I found the American ones jarring. In my hotel, MSNBC always seemed to be on, and I was shocked by its mawkishness and breathless boosterism.
•• Может быть, безоглядная/крикливая тенденциозность. А если быть посмелее, то можно попробовать и какое-нибудь более оригинальное слово, типа фанаберии (по Ожегову, кичливость, спесь, мелкое чванство).
•• В следующем примере употребления слова breathless трудно определить, имеем ли мы дело с контекстуальным вариантом значения (и контекстуальным переводом) или с новым значением (оттенком значения):
•• [China] the world’s next superpower is playing a very long game <...> subordinating temptation and instinct to its strategic desire not to alienate the US in the course of its breathless economic transformation. (Guardian)
•• Разумеется, напрашивается перевод стремительная экономическая трансформация.
