Quando si tratta di confini tra stati, la parola corretta è border: Il confine francese è a 10 km da qui, the French border is 10 km from here. Il sostantivo frontier indica una zona vicina al confine, non la linea di confine stessa: Trieste è una città di confine, Trieste is a frontier town. Infine, boundary indica i confini territoriali all'interno di uno stato: Il fiume Po segna il confine tra Veneto ed Emilia Romagna, the river Po marks the boundary between Veneto and Emilia Romagna.
