  • 122 Bradford System

The method used in the Yorkshire trade for spinning worsted yarns. The wool is oiled and then combed, the slivers, drawn by rolls are twisted into a rope form and wound on bobbins. The finished yarn is composed of parallel fibres and quite smooth (compare with French System)

  • 123 Brussels Carpets

Uncut pile fabrics, in which the worsted yarn used forms part of the fabric itself as well as the figure, and is woven through the cloth from back to face. These carpets are known as three-frame, four-frame, five-frame, etc., carpets. Each frame has a capacity of 256 bobbins of one colour, so in a five-frame fabric there are five colours, and in each dent of the reed there are five pile threads and two ground threads. The five-frame Brussels thus means five colours are used for figuring. Round wires are used (up to nine per inch) to form the pile, and these are withdrawn from the side of the cloth. A low imitation is made from coarse linen and jute yarns, and called Brusselette.

  • 124 Brussels Lace

  • 125 Brussels Point Lace

Lace with an open pattern made part open and part closed stitch, giving a shaded effect. They are very fine laces. It is called " Rose Point " when the design is of roses, and " Point Gaze " when the designs are of very fine, open, delicate motifs. Originally, Brussels was hand-made, designs worked separately, and applied to a net ground worked with bobbins. This fabric was smuggled into England, and called Point d'Angleterre, to avoid duty.

  • 126 Buckle Stitch

  • 127 Chafed Yarns

Weak yarn that has been rubbed till the fibres are drawn away. Overfilled bobbins, yarn on beams when drawn along the floor, shaky floors, will cause this defect.

  • 128 Chardonnet Rayon

A rayon yam made from cotton waste, which is converted into a nitro-cellulose stiff solution known as " collodion." The collodion is forced under pressure through small capillary tubes forming very fine threads, which solidify quickly when exposed to air. The threads can then be wound on bobbins. At this stage the threads are lustrous, but very inflammable, as it is chemically in the form of nitro-cellulose. The next process is to remove the nitro-groups by the operation termed denitration. The finished thread consists of regenerated cellulose.
