1 Blue-Coat
A blue coat was the usual habit of a serving-man in the 16th century and early 17th century. It appears to also have been the dress of a beadle in Shakespeare's days. The blue-coat laced with gold and sometimes with a red cape are additions of the 18th century. The form of the blue-coat worn in Edward VI's time has been preserved in the dress of the "Blue-coat Schools." In the reign of Henry VIII, all the apprentices of London wore blue cloaks in the summer and blue gowns in the winter. -
