blending+layer

  • 1 Blending Wool (Modern System)

A method of blending which is now greatly favoured, is performed by the introduction of air trunk conveyers. The improvement in method consists not only in the ease with which the blending is made, but in the better mixing and opening of the several elements of the blend, due to the action of the fans and air currents. Each element is fed separately through an opener, from which it is drawn by a fan and blown through an air trunk, provided with one or more openings over the mixing floor. Falling from the trunk the material is spread layer by layer as described above. This blending is then broken down and put through a combined hopper-fed willey and teazer, by which the blending is conveyed by an air trunk conveyer to bags, or is again spread on the mixing floor if it is- necessary to introduce a third element and make a more complicated blend.

  • 2 Blending Wool

After the materials have been well opened and cleansed, a large square bed of one material or colour (say 12-ft. X 12-ft., 6-in. to 9-in. thick), is made on the floor, then a bed of the second element in the mixing is spread over the preceding one, and so on. Each layer is levelled by beating with sticks; and oil is usually distributed by a rose spout as evenly as possible, according to requirements, on the layers. Oiling is, however, better done by a spraying apparatus attached to the teazer. No oil must come on cotton in a blend, but remanufactured products require more oil than wool. Scotch manufacturers usually put on 1-lb. oil to 5-lb. wool. There is little doubt that this proportion is excessive and militates against good results, but bad customs die hard. Dyed wool being harsher than undyed wool needs more oil. When the pile of layers reaches a convenient height (say 6 feet), it is broken down in vertical slices, shaken, and put through the teazer to mix thoroughly. Improved methods of blending wool are now being adopted, principally consisting of air trunk conveyers (see Blending Wool, Modem System)

  • 6 Condenser System (Derby Doubler Method)

The waste used in the spinning of cotton condenser yarns is chiefly the best class of hard waste, viz., cop bottoms, with sometimes a judicious addition of reelers' and winders' waste. The selection of material to be used in the production of condenser yams requires very careful attention and no small amount of skill and experience. Apart from colour, the guiding feature in the mixing of cop bottoms is uniformity of counts of the waste threads within certain limits. When one considers the factors employed in determining the standard amount of twist per inch in cotton yarns, viz., counts X 3.25 for weft, and counts X 3.75 for twist, it is obvious that if, say, 24's American and 80's Egyptian were mixed together the treatment necessary to tear the threads of 24's back again into fibre would not be nearly sufficient to put the 80's into the same condition. The result would be badly broken-up material, which would hamper the subsequent operations to an alarming extent. Assuming, then, that the waste purchased is of suitable quality, the first operation is to put down a mixing of the selected grades. The most satisfactory method is to spread layer after layer until the mixing is of sufficient size or weight. The attendant should then pull the waste along the whole of the face of the mixing. In this way a thorough blending takes place, with the risk of variation in shade reduced to a minimum.
