The wool of a breed of sheep, native to Scotland; it is of medium length, coarse and shaggy, and very uneven and greasy. The fleece is about 5-lb. and the staple 6-in. to 8-in. Spins 28's to 32's quality. Principally used for homespun tweeds and carpets. -

A dark, smooth and glossy fibre obtained from the leaves of a species of the Caryota palm in Ceylon. Owing to the stiffness of the fibre it is used as a substitute for horsehair. -

A West of England suiting cloth used for the highest grade of dress suits. It is a fairly heavy woollen fabric, and is heavily felted or milled, raised and cropped, brushed, steamed and pressed, which gives a soft firm handle and lustrous face. Only a small trade is done. -

A trade term in flax spinning for yarn stained with oil; also used to some extent in the cotton trade. -
