On dit de lui: " inic mihtoa âteponaztli, inic tlahtoa, âtlan conaquia in îtên, iuhquin acah teponazoa ic caquizti ", il s'appelle 'âteponaztli' car lorsqu'il chante il plonge son bec dans l'eau, cela résonne comme si quelqu'un jouait du tambour à deux tons.En Sah11,33 il est donné comme syn. de tôlcomoctli et également nommé 'âtoncuepohtli'.And.Dib.ll,57. traduisent 'the american bittern' Botaurus lentiginosus (Montagu).Note: semble faire l'objet d'une confusion avec le pélican ('âtôtolin'). On dit. d'ailleurs de lui, " inic mihtoa âtotôlin ahnozo âcoyôtl, têilaquiani " on l'appelle atotolin ou acoyotl, car ils noie les gens, particularité sur laquelle s'étend le paragrapheconsacré au pélican ('âtotôlin'). -

Del Castillo 58.Considéré comme le roi des animaux aquatiques - Hay una ave de agua en esta tierra que se llama 'atotolin', que quiere decir gallina del agua, la cual dicen que es rey de todas las aves del agua. (Sah HG liv. XI chap II à 3). 'Il arrive dans cette lagune de Mexico au mois de juillet avec les autres oiseaux aquatiques... Il se tient perpétuellement au milieu de l'eau, c'est pour ça qu'on l'appelle 'yollo in atl' (le coeur de l'eau); il se montre rarement; on dit que lorsqu'on veut le capturer, il crie, appelle le vent qui soulève les flots et submerge les embarcations avec leur équipage' (Ibidem). Il vit de rapine sur les bords de la lagune. Sahagun dit qu'on le nomme tôlcomoctli a cause de sa voix retentissante, et âteponaztli parce que, lorsqu'il chante, on dirait entendre le son de cet instrument.Form: nom d'objet sur comôni, morph.incorp. tôl-in, c'est du moins l'éthymologie proposée en Sah11,33. -
