    BIRRUS (Burreau, Burel, Burellas)
    A woollen cape or hood, worn over the shoulder or over the head as a cowl. It originated as an outdoor covering for the head among the Romans. It was used in Scotland and England during the 12th and 13th centuries by the poorer classes. The coarse woollen cloth, from which it was made, was also known by this name. Later on, rough clothing was made from brown-coloured Birrus cloth.
