Код 2B1Q представляет собой модулированный сигнал, имеющий 4 уровня (+3 +1 -1 -3), - представление каждой пары битов в виде одного четверичного (квадратурного) элемента, то есть в каждый момент времени передается 2 бита данных; при этом, например, пара битов 10 представляется уровнем +2,5 В, 11 - уровнем +0,833 В, 01 - уровнем -0,833 В, а 00 - уровнем -2,5 В. Технология 2B1Q для передачи потока 2 Мбит/с использует одну, две или три пары медного кабеля. По каждой из пар передается часть потока со скоростями 2320, 1168 или 784 кбит/с соответственно.
