Бактерии рода Bifidobacterium; особенностью этих организмов является то, что для их роста нужна атмосфера, содержащая 10% CO2, с полным отсутствием кислорода. Представитель рода Bifidobacterium bifidum преобладает в микрофлоре кишечника грудных детей. Бифидобактерии обнаружены также в кишечной флоре взрослых людей, встречаются и в других источниках.

[лат. bifidus — разделенный надвое и греч. bacterion — палочка]род бактерий из семейства Actinomycetaceae, составляющих 80—90 % кишечной флоры детей, которые находятся на грудном вскармливании, и молодняка с.-х. животных в подсосном периоде. Б. — полиморфные анаэробные (см. анаэробы) неподвижные грамположительные палочки, не образующие спор, часто дихотомически ветвящиеся; для человека непатогенны, являются антагонистами ряда патогенных микроорганизмов, в т.ч. гнилостных бактерий, способствуют перевариванию углеводов, осуществляют синтез витаминов К и группы В.
