(U.K.) Fin, HRa type of share incentive scheme in which an employee is given the option to buy a specified number of shares at a future date, at a price agreed at the present time. Share options provide a financial benefit to the recipient only if the share price rises over the period the option is available. If the share price falls over the period, the employee is under no obligation to buy the shares. There may be a tax advantage to the employees who participate in such a program.
