Отказался от доминировавшего в современной ему психологии метода интроспекции, основывал выводы на данных биологии; изучал изменения в поведении детей. Ввел понятие дуги "стимул-реакция" [stimulus-response], но позднее при изучении поведения животных пользовался терминологией русских ученых В. М. Бехтерева и И. П. Павлова. В 1908-20 профессор Университета Джонса Хопкинса [ Johns Hopkins University]. Основные труды: "Поведение.
