Город на юго-востоке штата Техас, на берегу залива Галвестон [Galveston Bay] и Хьюстонского судоходного канала [ Houston Ship Channel], в 30 км от г. Хьюстона [ Houston]. 66,4 тыс. жителей (2000). Центр нефтедобычи, нефтепереработка, терминал нефтепровода, нефтепорт. Производство химикатов, синтетического каучука. Рядом добыча серы. Белые поселенцы появились в этих местах в 20-е годы XIX в. Поселок рос вокруг торговой фактории [ trading post], созданной после Гражданской войны [ Civil War]; после 1918 добыча и переработка нефти способствовали дальнейшему росту. Бейтаун образован в 1947 при объединении трех населенных пунктов: Гуз-Крик [Goose Creek], Пелли [Pelly] и Бейтаун [Baytown]. -
