Перекрывает вход в Манильский залив на Филиппинах. Здесь в начале 1942 (с 3 января до 6 мая) состоялись драматические для американцев события второй мировой войны. После отхода в январе из Манилы на Батаан американские и филиппинские подразделения под командованием генерала Д. Макартура [ MacArthur, Douglas] 9 апреля уступили полуостров японским войскам. Выполняя приказ президента Ф. Д. Рузвельта [ Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)] об эвакуации с полуострова, Макартур заявил, прибыв в Австралию: "Я вернусь" [ I shall return]. На следующий день японцы отправили колонну военнопленных в несколько тысяч человек в лагерь военнопленных [ Bataan Death March]. Небольшое подразделение американских войск до 6 мая удерживало в своих руках островок Коррехидор [Corregidor].
