Основную защиту применяют для защиты от поражения электрическим током при нормальных условиях, характеризующихся отсутствием повреждений. Основная защита предусматривает применение мер предосторожности, которые исключают прикосновение человека и животных к опасным токоведущим частям, находящимся под напряжением. К таким мерам относят: использование основной изоляции опасных токоведущих частей, которая также препятствует появлению напряжения на открытых проводящих частях электрооборудования, размещение токоведущих частей в оболочках, за ограждениями или вне зоны досягаемости, применение барьеров, а также другие электрозащитные меры.

Люди и домашние животные должны быть защищены от опасности, которая может возникнуть от контакта с находящимися под напряжением частями электроустановки.
Эту защиту можно осуществлять одним из следующих способов:
- предотвращением протекания электрического тока через тело человека или домашнего животного;
- ограничением электрического тока, который может протекать через тело, до неопасного значения.[ ГОСТ Р 50571. 1-2009 ( МЭК 60364-1: 2005)]
