Поверхность, ниже уровня, которой не происходит донной эрозии. Различают Б. э. общий и местный. За общий Б. э. принимается уровень Мирового океана. Местный Б. э. может быть как постоянным (например, устья рек), так и временным, располагаясь на участках, примыкающих к водопадам или порогам.
