Исходные положения анализа потребительского спроса, определяющие возможность выносить заключения о предпочтениях потребителя, когда известен сделанный им потребительский выбор. Сформулированы П. Сэмюэлсоном и поэтому называются также аксиомами Сэмюэлсона. Общий смысл аксиом состоит в следующем: считается, что набор благ q0 при векторе цен p0 и при общем расходе на приобретение этих благ Z0 «выявленно» предпочитается другому набору q1, если потребитель при том же векторе цен купил набор q0, в то время как мог бы на те же деньги купить набор q1. Это записывается так: q0q1 если, и только если p0q0>p0q1. На этой основе строятся так называемые слабая и сильная аксиомы; слабая утверждает, что если набор q0 явно предпочтительнее набора q1, то q1 не может быть предпочтительнее q0, т.е. отношение явного предпочтения — асимметрично. Сильная аксиома относится не только к двум наборам, но к любому их числу. Она позволяет сопоставлять и такие наборы, которые непосредственно по тем или иным причинам «несравнимы» (например, q0 и qn). Аксиома утверждает, что если набор q0 явно предпочтительнее набора q1, набор q1 явно предпочтительнее набора q2 и так далее, до qn, то набор qn не может быть предпочтительнее, чем q0. При некоторых дополнительных условиях этим создается возможность построения функции полезности.
