È consuetudine organizzare feste e cenoni e, a mezzanotte, brindare e intonare "Auld Lang Syne", un'antica canzone tradizionale scozzeze il cui titolo significa "tempi passati". Si usa poi andare a trovare gli amici per brindare insieme al nuovo anno: il cosiddetto "first footing". La tradizione vuole che sia di buon auspicio per l'anno nuovo se il primo a varcare la soglia dopo la mezzanotte è un uomo dai capelli scuri che porta in dono qualcosa da bere, da mangiare o un pezzetto di carbone.
