La syndication consiste à mettre à disposition les nouvelles informations de son site web par le biais d’un fil de syndication (souvent appelé fil RSS, fil Atom ou fil XML), afin que celles-ci puissent être collectées par un agrégateur, à savoir un logiciel de lecture permettant à l’usager de lire en un seul point les informations émanant de nombreux sites sans devoir aller consulter les sites eux-mêmes. Pour un site de presse, les informations procurées par le webmestre dans le fil de syndication comprennent par exemple les titres des articles avec un descriptif court et leur adresse URL (uniform resource locator). L’usager souhaitant s’abonner utilise un petit bouton cliquable, souvent orange, pour avoir l’adresse URL du fil de syndication. Utilisée à l’origine pour suivre l’actualité sur des sites de presse, des forums ou des blogs, la syndication est désormais utilisée dans de nombreux autres domaines, par exemple pour recevoir les titres des dernières publications, les annonces des nouveaux logiciels ou la liste des produits d’un site marchand. La syndication de contenu se fait le plus souvent en utilisant le format RSS (really simple syndication) ou le format Atom. Basés sur le format XML (extensible markup language), ils fournissent tous deux un système simple de publication de listes (articles, livres, logiciels, etc.) via un logiciel ou une application web.
