42 Lisle Finish
The fabric is treated in a weak solution of sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and then dried before washing out the acid. The fabric is then placed in a machine that exposes it to the air and heated to about 100 deg. F. After a time the loose ends and fuzzy fibres become brittle and break off in the tumbling given to the fabric by the machine. When the proper finish is obtained the fabric is cooled and washed in an alkaline bath which stops the action of the dry acid and neutralises it. After thorough washing in water it is dried and the fabric is ready for dyeing. ———————— A finish given to yarns that are to be used for hosiery or underwear. See Lisle Thread. -

44 Soap Shrunk Finish
Worsted serges and dress goods are said to be soap shrunk when they are scoured and milled up to the last in soap solutions. Usually the goods are milled one inch narrower than they are intended to finish and this inch is pulled out again in tentering. The finish is seen at its best upon the finer cloths and the fabrics are soft, of full handle, and bright in appearance. When properly done these cloths do not shrink.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Soap Shrunk Finish

45 Elastic Finish
BRISE, or ELASTIC FINISHA finish for muslin, jaconets, etc., and is a special one to keep the fabric soft and clothy, leaving yams round. Drying is done on stenters, and the cloth moving all the time. ———————— Such fabrics as batiste and muslin, require to have a degree of elasticity so that when bent they will resume their normal position when the pressure is released. This elasticity depends upon glutinous substances mixed with other ingredients in the mixture. The permanency of the elasticity depends on the condition of the atmosphere as moisture will effect this. -
46 Irish Beetle Finish
A finish given to linen fabrics which produces a soft, full, thready feel with glossy surface. The cloth remains fresh and bright much longer than fabrics finished by any other method. 59 Schreiner Finish
A special finish used largely in the finishing of black cotton sateens, Italians, etc. It is obtained by means of a machine similar to but heavier than a calender. A steel bowl is engraved with fine diagonal lines varying from about 150 to 350 per inch, depending upon the finish required. Two bowls are used, the top engraved steel and the bottom compressed cotton. Great pressure is applied to the bowls in order to emboss the fabric with the fine lines. As a rule the fabrics for Schreinering are mercerised beforehand. The lustre on the finished cloth is greatly enhanced by Schreinering. The best lustre is obtained when the engraved lines on the bowl run as nearly as possible parallel with the individual fibres in the yarn. The Schreiner effect is not permanent, it is removed by washing. -
60 Dress-Pace Finish
Such cloths as beavers, billiard cloth, doeskins, pilots, and other heavily felted and raised woollen fabrics, are dress-face finished. During the finishing the fabrics are made dense and fibrous by " felting," then the fibres are drawn to the surface, straightened and combed in one direction by " raising " and lustre is given in a boiling process. The finished fabric is covered with a short nap so that the weave is entirely hidden.
