[alzaslɔrɛn] nom propre fémininThis eastern part of France was the underlying cause of the longstanding conflict between Germany and France. Consisting of part of the two old French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine (today the departements of Haut Rhin, Bas Rhin and Moselle) it was seized by the Germans at the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871, becoming part of the German Reich. Reverting to France after the First World War, seized by Germany again in 1940, the Alsace-Lorraine was finally restored to France at the end of the Second World War. -
