Это слово было сформировано по аналогии с такими словами, как ageism, ableism, racism и др., которые стали распространённым явлением в конце XX в., когда дискриминация любого сорта была широко представлена в британских средствах массовой информации. В новостях 1988 г. читаем:Alan Whelan, a teacher from Ealing, is fed up with coming last just because his surname begins with a W. He is convinced that he is subject to an invidious type of discrimination — alphabetism. — Алану Вилану, учителю из Илинга, надоело быть всегда последним только потому, что его фамилия начинается на букву W.
