это простое слово имеет множество непрямых значений.Оно может указывать на преимущество, особенно за счет связей. Может означать текущую моду, фасон, манеру, а также принадлежность к определенному кругу, принятие этим кругом. Но в полиции это уже будет - арестованный. Смыслы то все сходные - быть как бы там, внутри. Вот несколько характерных сочетаний:In a hole — загнали человека, по-нашему, в угол. (*) Up shit creek - тот же смысл, но грубее. Есть еще эквивалентное выражение, про дерьмовую речку - In a shit river - в точности соответствует нашему: "По уши в дерьме".
