Эта стратегия используется, когда производитель не имеет достоверной информации о требуемых сроках производства и количестве изделий (что соответствует стратегии производства MTS), а также при коротком производственном цикле или для вспомогательных материалов. Предметом расчета в PDS-моделях являются количественные параметры заказов на сырьё и комплектующие - минимальный (неснижаемый запас), точка заказа (количество запасов, при снижении ниже которого следует сделать очередной заказ), размер очередного заказа (перезаказа) и др.
Существует две основные группы моделей определения оптимального размера поставки: динамические (DLS - Dynamic lot sizing), в которых потребление может быть неравномерным, а, следовательно, пороговый уровень запаса может иметь плавающую величину:
WWA (Wagner - Whitin algorithm)
POQ (Periodic order quantity)
PPA (Part period algorithm)
IPPA (Incremental part period algorithm)
LUC (Least unit cost),
и статические, в числе которых наиболее известна модель EOQ.
