1 Adjectives without nouns
Как правило, прилагательные в английском языке употребляются как определения при существительных или в составе именной части сказуемого. Отдельное использование прилагательных в качестве существительных возможно только в ряде специальных случаев:1) Как существительные употребляются прилагательные, обозначающие определенные известные группы людей, в частности, объединенных каким-либо общим физическим состоянием или общественным положением. При прилагательном ставится определенный артикль the. Такие субстантивированные прилагательные обозначают всю соответствующую группу лиц и не могут указывать на ее отдельных представителей. Эти прилагательные согласуются с глаголом во множественном числе.receive welfare payments from the government — Безработные получают денежные пособия от государства.2) В роли существительных используются некоторые прилагательные, оканчивающиеся на -sh или -ch, которые обозначают национальную принадлежность. 5) Прилагательное также может быть употреблено без существительного, если соответствующее существительное было упомянуто ранее или легко восстанавливается из контекстаWhat bread have you bought? - Both white and brown. — Какой хлеб ты купила? - И белый, и черный.
He's the richest in the town. — Он самый богатый в городе.

3) Существительные, обозначающие предметы, существующие в единственном экземпляре и известные всем (например, the sun — солнце), как правило, употребляются с определенным артиклем. Также с определенным артиклем употребляются существительные, обозначающие предметы и явления, типичные для окружения любого человека, являющегося потенциальным адресатом соответствующего высказывания, и, соответственно, считающиеся общеизвестными: the weather — погода, the police — полиция, the sea — море, водное пространство (в противоположность суше).Ursula looked at the moon — Урсула взглянула на луну.

4) Если существительное в единственном числе употреблено в родовом значении, то есть для обозначения всего класса соответствующих предметов как целого или любого представителя этого класса, то при нем ставится определенный артикль. В частности, существительное в единственном числе с определенным артиклем, употребленное как родовое, может называть вид растений, животных, машин и т.д., обозначать музыкальные инструменты.elephant is a native only of the torrid zone and its vicinities — Слон обитает только в тропиках и смежных с ними зонах.At the century's beginning the telephone was new and the computer not even invented — В начале века телефон был новинкой, а компьютер даже еще не был изобретен.

5) Как правило, если при существительном имеется определение в превосходной степени, то перед ним ставится определенный артикль (превосходная степень прилагательного предполагает уникальность предмета в контексте).At the age of 17, he was the youngest member of the expedition. — Семнадцати лет от роду, он был самым молодым участником экспедиции.
