To travel around the world имеет в виду кругосветное путешествие с конечным возвращением в отправной пункт и соответствует русскому 'совершить путешествие вокруг света'. То travel about the world означает 'путешествовать по свету'. Наречие round означает 'кругом, по кругу': to turn round 'повернуться кругом', the sun goes round 'солнце совершает движение по кругу'. Around имеет значение 'со всех сторон, везде, повсюду': woods stretching for miles around 'леса, протянувшиеся на много миль кругом', things Scattered around (или about) 'разбросанные кругом (повсюду) вещи'.
