Политическое движение за отмену рабства. Начало массового движения принято относить к 30-м гг. XIX в., когда начала издаваться газета "Либерейтор" [ Liberator, The] и было основано Американское общество борьбы с рабством [ American Anti-Slavery Society]. К 1840 в движении сложилось два течения. Большинство аболиционистов во главе с У. Гаррисоном [ Garrison, William Lloyd] считало, что с рабством необходимо бороться не прибегая к силе. Меньшинство, возглавляемое Ф. Дуглассом [ Douglass, Frederick], выступало за применение вооруженной силы. Джон Браун [ Brown, John] предпринял неудавшуюся вооруженную попытку освободить рабов в 1859.
