5 Sari
SARI, SARRIEA shawl which is the feminine counterpart of the dhuti or dhooti, usually 40-in. wide and 7 yards to 8 yards long, worn as a skirt by the native women of India and the East Indies. Made in many qualities, but all have a woven or printed border at each side and a very fancy deep heading at each end. The sari is such a commonly used cloth that qualities range from a cheap grey with plain coloured borders up to expensive ones with silk or even gold thread borders. It is worn by the Mohammedan women in India, wrapped several times around the loins and part hanging down over the legs serves as a skirt, while the other end passes over the head and hangs down on one side. The Hindu women wear the Boonnee which is similar. The grey or white sari differs from the grey or white dhuti in having the border more than 3/4-in. wide. The coloured sari is made in a great variety of colours and patterns and is generally worn by women of those classes in which the bordered grey or white dhuti is not worn by men. Saris are also made and sold in sets of two or more. These include Nilambari with blue ground, Patapati with printed designs. Anarasi of pineapple colour and Pachan worn by the aborigines of Ranchi. -

15 Carpets
The principal types are Axminster, Brussels and Wilton, and brief particulars of each are given below. A more detailed description is given under each name. Axminster is a cut fabric made any width and with any number of colours. It is not produced on a jacquard, therefore the pile does not show on the back. The design is developed by a series of tufts which are bound into the fabric, every tuft is on the surface and only the foundation cloth is seen at the back. There are two principal varieties of these carpets, the Chenille Axminster and the Machine tufted Axminster. The Chenille type is made by two distinct operations, that of manufacturing the chenille weft and that of weaving the carpet with this weft. The " fur or chenille is first woven on an ordinary loom (see chenille) and when cut into the strips is used as weft with a linen, jute or folded cotton warp. The chenille is made preferably with the leno way of shedding in order to bind the wool yarn more firmly. All the figuring weft is on the surface and not embedded in the fabric. The chenille weft is often inserted by hand, but several mechanical methods for doing the work are now in use. From three to six tufts per inch are usual. The chenille Axminster Carpet is also known as the Patent Axminster carpet. The machine-tufted type or Royal Axminster is also formed from pile tufts previously prepared and afterwards woven in the ground warp and bound into the fabric with a binding weft. The tufts may be inserted by hand and the pile is all on the surface of the fabric. This pile is a warp product, whereas for the chenille variety it is weft. Axminster carpets are a product of skill and patience and any number of colours can be used. There are several varieties of machine-made axminster carpets. Wilton is a cut pile fabric woven 27-in. wide from not more than six colours, the yarns are fine counts and design produced by jacquards. Brussels is made almost in the same way as a Wilton, but the pile is not cut and this shows as loops on the face. The yarn is much coarser than for Wiltons. Kidderminster - A carpet made from two or more plain cloths woven together. Each cloth is brought on the face for figuring as required. Turkish - These are hand made. The pile is put into the ground warp by hand as tufts and knotted round them according to pattern. There are two picks of ground weft between each row of pile. Tapestry - Carpets woven from printed warps. The pile is cut or left uncut as required for the design. Persian - Carpets similar to Turkish, being hand made. See also Axminster, Brussels, Kidderminster, Persian Tapestry, Turkish, Wilton Carpets, Body Brussels, Brusselette, Ingrain. -
16 Madras Handkerchiefs
MADRAS HANDKERCHIEFS (Imitation, Lancashire make)Plain weave cotton fabric woven in coloured stripes 36-in. 8 yards, 80 ends and 128 picks per inch, 60's T., 40's W. When indigo or green is used the count is 50's. Other colours most in favour are grey, turkey red, chocolate and yellow. The colours are not fast. The feature of the cloth is that some of the warp yarn bleeds during finishing and tints the grey weft which gives a solid colour effect. ———————— There is a certain class of dyed cotton goods hand-woven on native looms in Madras known as " Madras Handkerchiefs." Their principal use is as dress for the native women of several of our Colonies and elsewhere. The real Madras handkerchief has a peculiar smell which never entirely disappears. Lancashire can and does produce a handkerchief at a much lower price than the hand-made article, but Lancashire cannot reproduce the smell. Owing to the absence of this smell Lancashire cannot compete, and today the native will pay twice as much for the real handkerchief, recognised by its smell, as for the Lancashire article. The hand-loom weavers in the Madras Presidency produce a large quantity of these fabrics and the style was invented there. The European variety is an imitation. The native-made fabric is 36-in. wide and 8 yards long, woven ends and 128 picks per inch, warp usually 60's grey, turkey red, yellow, chocolate, and 50's indigo and green. The weft is 40's both grey and coloured, weight about 26-oz. The yarns are generally imported grey and dyed locally with the one exception of turkey red. The colours are loose in the warp so that the grey weft is tinted. These hand-made fabrics are still better in handle and style than the imitations and are preferred in the Indian markets.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Madras Handkerchiefs

PATTI, or PATThe hair of a goat, common in Kabul and Peshawar. It is used in making the fabric known as Pattu. ———————— A wool fabric native woven in the hill districts of India, in pieces from 9-in. to 18-in. wide and 10 yards to 12 yards long. Made of pat wool or sometimes Shabri. Several of these are sewn together to make a pattu. ———————— An Indian term given to a variety of carpets made in the Madras Presidency. The designs are very crude and only blue, white and red colours used. The yarns are generally cotton in very coarse counts; wool is seldom used, but jute is sometimes used. The term also describes the leg wrapping made in narrow strips from cotton or wool yarns and wound spirally round the leg from ankle to knee. The military puttee is derived from this. The term also describes another narrow fabric made 9-in. to 12-in. wide and stitched together to make bags, tents, screens, etc. This is made from cotton or jute yarns, and is common in the Madras district. -
