4 Mate, Rudolph
1898-1964Polaco de nacimiento, Rudolph Mate es el director de fotografia de La pasion de Juana de Arco (La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, Carl Th. Dreyer, 1928), La bruja vampiro (Vampyr, Carl Th. Dreyer, 1930) o Liliom (Fritz Lang, 1934). Ya en Estados Unidos, continua con su labor fotografica hasta que, en 1947, se pasa a la direccion. La primera pelicula que firma en solitario es la magnifica Con las horas contadas (D.O.A., 1949), un subyugante ejercicio de estilo. Mas tarde alternara peliculas mejores y peores, pero el conjunto de su obra es altamente estimable, en particular algunos de sus westerns, como Marcado a fuego, Hombres violentos y La ley de los fuertes.
