       Nacido en la ciudad de Mulhouse, entonces alemana, hoy francesa, de padres judios de origen suizo, William Wyler sufrio los efectos de la Primera Guerra Mundial en su ciudad, que paso definitivamente a manos francesas como consecuencia del Tratado de Versalles. Estudio en Lausanne, en el Instituto de Segunda Ensenanza y en la Escuela Superior de Comercio. Tras ser expulsado de esta institucion, trabajo en Paris algun tiempo antes de volver a la casa familiar. Recomendado a su tio Carl Laemmle, magnate de la Universal, marcha a los Estados Unidos, donde desde chico de los recados llego, a los 23 anos, a dirigir su primera pelicula, Crook Buster, cortometraje de dos bobinas. Su primer largometraje data de 1926, y su primera pelicula sonora, de 1930, es precisamente un western, Hell’s Heroes. Su etapa mas fecunda, hasta su encuentro providencial con la actriz Bette Davis, fue en la productora de Samuel Goldwyn, para la que rodo algunos filmes que le hicieron destacar como director, en particular Calle sin salida (Dead End, 1937), cuyo evidente origen teatral ponia de manifiesto mas si cabe la maestria de Wyler en la direccion de actores y en la creacion de ambientes. Desde Jezabel (Jezebel, 1938) en adelante, Wyler se iria consolidando como uno de los grandes directores del cine americano. Algunas de sus peliculas, como Cumbres borras cosas (Wuthering Heights, 1937), La senora Miniver (Mrs. Mini ver, 1941) o Vacaciones en Roma (Roman Holiday, 1953), son clasicos de todos los tiempos. Olvidado a raiz de su mastodontico Ben-Hur (1959), ha sido reivindicado en los ultimos anos como un modelo a seguir en lo relativo a la gramatica del relato cinematografico. En el terreno que nos ocupa, Wil liam Wyler ha dirigido un gran western, El fo rastero, con una pareja protagonista dificil de mejorar. Tambien, dentro del genero, La gran prueba, western atipico, alegato pacifista con todas las reservas, y Horizontes de grandeza, ejemplo de pelicula de gran presupuesto, simbolo de una epoca, los anos 50, en que el cine de Hollywood trataba por todos los medios de contrarrestar la creciente competencia de la television; ambas son de menor interes que la primera, aunque en ningun caso desdenables.

       Especialista, actor, doble de las estrellas en escenas arriesgadas, director de escenas de accion, realizador, Yakima Canutt es uno de los nombres miticos en el western. Siempre sera dificil determinar hasta don de llega su responsabilidad en un rodaje, por lo que, mas que en ningun otro caso, establecer su filmografia como director es siempre una tarea aproximada. Procedente del mundo del rodeo, su hipotetica ca rrera como actor se quebro con la llegada del sonoro, ya que padecia una dolencia irreversible de las cuerdas vocales. Aparte de su trabajo en la mitica La diligencia (Stagecoach, John Ford, 1939), Canutt dirigio integramente la famosa se cuencia de la carrera de cuadrigas de Ben-Hur (William Wyler, 1959).

       Checo de nacimiento, estudiante de Arquitectura en Viena, fue ayudante del mitico Max Reinhardt. Llego a Hollywood en 1940, trabajando como director artistico y disenador de produccion, asociado a William Cameron Menzies. Como disenador de produccion consigue el Oscar en dos ocasiones, con La heredera (The Heiress, William Wyler, 1949), y El buscavidas (The Hustler, Robert Rossen, 1961). En los anos 50, Horner aborda esporadicamente la direccion de cine y de television. Realiza un unico western, de tema, personajes y actores protagonistas mejicanos.

Trabaja practicamente siempre en los Estados Unidos, donde se hace un nombre como director de segunda unidad en peliculas tan famosas como Ben- Hur (William Wyler, 1959), Cleopatra (Joseph L. Man kiewicz, 1961-63), o 55 dias en Pekin (55 Days at Peking, Nicholas Ray, 1963). Como director, su maximo exito lo alcanza, junto al britanico Compton Ben nett, con Las minas del rey Salomon (King Solomon’s Mines, 1950).

       Victima de la lista negra elaborada por el siniestro Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas, Vor haus, que ya habia ganado cierto prestigio como di rector en Inglaterra durante los anos 30, se vio obligado a trabajar en los anos 50 como ayudante de di reccion en peliculas importantes rodadas en Europa por directores norteamericanos, como Vacaciones en Roma (Roman Holi day, William Wyler, 1953), La condesa descalza (The Barefoot Contessa, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1954) o Historia de una monja (The Nun’s Story, Fred Zinnemann, 1959), siempre con el seudonimo de Piero Mussetta, que podia evitar incomodas situaciones. Volvio de nuevo a vivir en Inglaterra, donde murio. Lo mejor que se dijo de su labor como director corrio a cargo de David Lean, quien reconocio la influencia que sobre el habia ejercido Vorhaus.
