Durante la crisi costituzionale per la successione a Giacomo II nel 1679, il termine passò a indicare il partito riformista e protestante, oppositore del diritto divino della Corona e sostenitore della tolleranza religiosa e degli interessi della aristocrazia e della classe mercantile. Il partito Whig vero e proprio nacque nel tardo Settecento, e verso la metà dell'Ottocento si trasformò nel Liberal Party ( partito liberale). In seguito l'aggettivo Whig venne associato alla visione progressista e migliorista della storia.
