    Victorian [vɪk'tɔ:rɪən]
    victorien;
    a return to Victorian values un retour aux valeurs victoriennes ou de l'époque victorienne
    2 noun
    Victorien(enne) m,f
    VICTORIAN VALUES Le sens du devoir et la stricte moralité qui caractérisèrent le règne (1837-1901) de la reine Victoria symbolisent traditionnellement le puritanisme du XIXème siècle britannique. Ceci coïncidait avec l'apogée de l'Empire et de la prospérité économique britanniques. Dans les années 80, Margaret Thatcher, en s'employant à radicalement transformer le paysage politique du pays, invoquait les vertus victoriennes du travail et de l'auto-suffisance économique. Son successeur John Major utilisa lors de sa campagne électorale le slogan "Back to Basics", mais cette tentative d'un retour aux valeurs traditionnelles de l'ère victorienne (esprit d'initiative, esprit d'entreprise et importance de la famille) comme antidote à la permissivité héritée des années 60, se retourna contre le gouvernement lorsqu'une série de scandales compromettant des ministres éclata au grand jour.
