Издается в г. Вашингтоне одноименной компанией. Основан журналистом Д. Лоренсом [Lawrence, David] в 1933 как еженедельная газета под названием "Юнайтед Стейтс ньюс" [United States News], в 1940 стал издаваться в журнальном формате. В 1947 слился с журналом "Уорлд рипорт" [World Report], основанным в 1946. С 1948 выходит под современным названием.
