Тогда договариваются, что мать поселится у Норико, а отец – у своего старого друга из Ономити, давно уже переехавшего в Токио: господина Хаттори, нотариуса. «Вот мы и стали бездомными», – смеясь, заключает отец. Вместе с Хаттори и с еще одним другом он проводит вечер и часть ночи за веселой попойкой. Полиция отвозит его и 3-го друга к Сигэ: оба мертвецки пьяны. Своей скромностью он напоминает героя Тисю Рю, который не хочет слишком строго судить детей («Они не так любезны, как раньше, но все равно любезнее многих», – говорит он жене). Стиль фильма старается сохранить равновесие между осознанием очерствения сердец у детей и не менее сознательной покорностью обстоятельствам, которые могут объяснить, если не оправдать, такой эгоизм. В авторской интонации также сохраняется равновесие между сожалением и безмятежным спокойствием. Токийская повесть – типичный пример элегии, в которой автор дает почувствовать свою боль, не окрашивая ее в беспросветно черные тона.Важнейшее значение для фильма имеет образ невестки (Сэцуко Хара). Этот персонаж не только по контрасту выделяет безразличие других детей: он помогает нам понять, что Одзу, истовый защитник семейных ценностей, еще больше отстаивал добродетели отдельной личности.
