Stepford est une petite ville américaine où toutes les femmes semblent trouver l'épanouissement complet dans leur rôle de ménagères et de femmes au foyer; il s'avère par la suite que les hommes se sont débarrassés de leurs épouses et les ont remplacées par des androïdes. On utilise l'expression Stepford wife à propos d'une femme qui semble obsédée par les tâches ménagères ou bien qui a le regard vide.
